Accepting an Invitation
What happens when you follow an invitation link, whether you are new, already have an account, or are signed in as someone else, and why the link is signed.
By the end of this page you will know what the invitation email contains, what the link does for you depending on whether you already have an account, and what to do when the page says the invitation is not yours or no longer valid.
An invitation is the only way into Zuse Bifrost. Someone in a team invites your email address, with the role you will hold or, for a client, the project you are invited to, and you receive an email titled You are invited to <team> on ZuseGenius with one button: Accept the invitation.
The link is signed
The address behind the button carries a signature. It works only as it was sent, and only while the invitation is pending: once accepted or withdrawn, it leads to a page that says so. Because the link reached your inbox, following it proves you own that address, which is why an account created from it starts verified and you are never sent a second email to confirm.
Do not forward the email. Whoever follows the link can accept the invitation in your name. If you forwarded it by mistake, ask the person who invited you to withdraw it and send a new one.
If you are new
- Follow Accept the invitation. The page is titled Join <team> and shows the role you were invited as, the project when you are a guest, and who invited you.
- Check your Email. It is the address the invitation was sent to and cannot be changed here; a different address needs a different invitation.
- Confirm Your name. It is pre-filled when the inviter gave one, and you can correct it.
- Choose a Password and type it again under Confirm password.
- Press Create Account and Join.
Your account is created, already verified, with the job title the inviter typed if they gave one; you join the team under the offered role; and you are signed in and taken to the dashboard, working within that team. A guest also receives the membership of the project they were invited to, and sees that project and nothing else.
Afterwards, Account Settings is where you add a passkey or turn on two-factor authentication.
If you already have an account
- Follow Accept the invitation.
- Signed out: you are sent to the sign-in page with a note that signing in accepts your invitation. Sign in with your password or a passkey and answer the two-factor challenge if you have one. The invitation is accepted the moment the sign-in completes, and you land on the dashboard.
- Signed in as the invited address: you join the team the moment the page opens and are taken to the dashboard.
If you had no current team before, the team you joined becomes current. Otherwise your current team stays as it was, and the new team appears in the switcher in the account menu.
If the page says the invitation is for someone else
You followed the link while signed in to an account whose address is not the invited one. The page names both addresses and offers Sign out, after which you can open the link again and sign in or sign up as the invited address, and Back to the dashboard if you only wanted to check. Nothing was accepted. If the invitation should have been sent to the address you are signed in with, ask the inviter to withdraw it and invite that address instead.
If the page says the invitation is no longer valid
The invitation was withdrawn, was already accepted, or the link lost part of its address on the way. Ask whoever invited you to send a new one; a new invitation is a new link.
